Was American racism to blame for the September 11 attacks? A group of activists in Wisconsin think so.
The Waukesha County Diversity Task Force plans to use the second anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks to launch an effort to end racism in the county by 2006. Why?
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the group believes that "if America were more tolerant of racial and ethnic minorities, we would not evoke hostility abroad and would not have been attacked Sept. 11, 2001 by Islamic extremists."
The paper quotes group co-chairwoman Mary Baer: "Some of the reasons it happened are our arrogance and our ignorance," she said.
Accordingly, the group gathered a coalition to begin fighting racism and promoting diversity beginning Sept. 11, 2003, when invited members would sign a pledge to "develop a new US nation strengthened by diversity."
So the blame-America-first crowd has fallen into self-parody again.
Pretend, for the sake of argument, that Islamic fundamentalists really did launch attacks to punish societies for their lack of diversity and intolerance of minorities.
Why, then, would they choose to attack Americathe most diverse nation in the history of the world!
In New York, the bloodiest site of the terrorist attacks, people of all races, religions, and national origins share apartment buildings, offices, subway cars. You could attend religious services for a dozen religions in
the same day, and eat a different type of ethnic food every day for a month. And the same can be said of countless American citieseach with their own
diverse cultures, regional preferences, and pockets of immigrant groups.
Never in history have so many different people lived together in such harmony as in the United Statesyet calls for greater diversity still manage to rally the far left, too blind to see that they live in the multicultural paradise of which they dream.
Too blind to see the stripes of America's enemies, as well.
The men that attacked us almost two years ago came from some of the least diverse, most intolerant countries in the world. In most of the Middle East, dissidents and ethnic minorities are arrested, tortured, or just disappear. Christians, Jews, and Westerners are hated. American Peace Corps volunteers are jeered, threatened, assaulted.
The 9/11 hijackers embodied the worst elements of those societiesfanatical, intolerant, prone to violence, taking glory in murder.
Yet the Diversity Task Force ennobles these murderers by suggesting that the terrorist attacks were well-deserved punishment for America's alleged shortcomings. Thankfully, even most in Waukesha seem to have rejected this nonsense: a co-chairman bowed out, and a flood of criticism poured in once the news hit the papers.
Meanwhile, group members seem to be sticking to their philosophy, though less explicitly. In the papers, they tried to paint the fiasco as a misunderstanding. Typically, they do not question the ideology that has led
them to overlook facts and lose all perspective.
"I apologize that my statements were misunderstood," said Mary Baer, the co-chairwoman, but added that the group stands behind the task force and its mission.
The Leftstill crazy after all these years.
